![]() SMD’s DART mission recently demonstrated the potential to deflect an asteroid, an ability that could save us from sharing the fate of T-Rex. SMD funds the Planetary Defense telescopes that protect our planet by identifying and tracking potentially dangerous Near-Earth Objects (NEOs). the DART mission, which slightly diverted the path of the asteroid Dimorphos. NASA science programs are the most visible demonstration that the United States is the world’s scientific superpower.Ī photo by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope reveals boulders blown from the surface by the impact of. Mars Sample Return(MSR) is going to be expensive by NASA standards but scraping it wouldn’t pay for even half of the $17 billion Block-4 update the F-35 now requires. The team is currently working on a very challenging mission to return samples of Martian soil to Earth for analysis and hopefully answer some age-old questions about current or past life on other worlds. SMD runs the agency’s spectacularly successful planetary missions including the popular Mars rovers and the remarkable helicopter now flying across the surface of the Red Planet. It appears that NASA Science Mission Directorate is taking the hit for what is essentially a token swipe at NASA’s topline budget. However, supporting something as ambitious as Artemis while holding the budget flat for appearances sake, demands cuts elsewhere. System redundancy is critical for sustainable access to the lunar surface and competition will drive down the long-term costs. Most critically, they provide money for two landers systems. I helped to initiate the goal of permanently and sustainably returning Americans to the Moon and I am pleased that the congressional budget drafts adequately fund the Artemis program. Thankfully, Congress recognizes that our human exploration of space must go forward. NASA's Artemis 1 mission awaits launch at Kennedy Space Center, August 2022.
